Why Core Web Vitals still matter

Google has spent years telling us that experience is a ranking signal — and in 2025 the message is louder than ever. But the bigger story for marketers is not rankings, it's revenue. Faster pages convert better, full stop. A sluggish landing page leaks every dollar you spend driving traffic to it.

Core Web Vitals give you a shared, measurable language for “fast enough”. When your developers, designers and media buyers all look at the same three numbers, prioritization gets a lot easier.

The three metrics, decoded

You only need to remember three letters:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how quickly the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — how snappy the page feels when users tap and click. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — how stable the layout is while loading. Aim for under 0.1.
The goal isn't a perfect Lighthouse score. It's a page that feels instant to a real user on a mid-range phone over 4G.

A prioritized fix checklist

Work top-down — the items at the top usually deliver the biggest wins for the least effort:

  1. Compress and lazy-load images, and serve modern formats like WebP/AVIF.
  2. Reserve space for media and ads to eliminate layout shift.
  3. Defer non-critical JavaScript and split heavy bundles.
  4. Preload your hero image and primary font.
  5. Audit third-party scripts — tag managers are a common culprit.

Most teams find that the first two items alone move LCP and CLS into the green.

How to measure and report impact

Use field data, not just lab data. Connect the metrics to business outcomes by pairing your Web Vitals dashboard with conversion rate by page. When you can say “we cut LCP by 1.2s and lifted form starts 14%”, you turn a technical task into a clear, fundable story.
